Recently I've heard some second and third hand comments about personal attacks, being posted on my forum. I have witnessed some things go wildly off topic. Freedom of speech is something I have always thought, should be used to convey differing views, but intentionally hurting or putting down someone is something entirely different. One question has occurred to me though, do people really think, that if it's not posted here, it's not being said? From my perspective, having the ability to put in a response, to something someone has said about you, is a whole lot better than having something said about you, with no opportunity to defend yourself. Which I'm sure we can all agree was common place, long before the forum existed. If a defense cannot be made, then maybe it's not so much the comment people have issue with, as an unwillingness to recognize it's validity. Also when someone puts a view on this forum, aren't they expecting a response? Good bad or indifferent, once they've put it out there, they will most likely be forced to defend it, whether they like it or not. The fact that some people don't use their real names, doesn't stop them from recognizing themselves does it? The person who receives criticism in response to their comment still knows it was meant for them. If you take issue with something someone you don't know says about you, it doesn't change whether the criticism should ultimately be given weight or not, does it? Just because you don't recognize the name, or do those people think that only the opinions of a select few are worthy of consideration? I've offered this service because I felt it would be of benefit to allow people to discuss their viewpoints. The intelligent exchanges I've witnessed reinforce for me that I am offering a service of value and encourage me to continue to do so.
